Jane Austen meets the 21st century. Joanna Trollope takes the Dashwood sisters out of Regency England and drops them into modern-day Britain — smartphones, student debt, and all. When their father dies and leaves everything to his son, Elinor and Marianne are forced to downsize, relocate, and rebuild. Elinor, the practical one, tries to hold it together. Marianne, the romantic, falls hard for the wrong man and posts about it on social media. The bones of Austen's story remain — duty versus desire, financial precarity, sisterhood under pressure — but Trollope translates the stakes into a world where inheritance laws have changed but emotional entanglements haven't. It's sharper and more grounded than you'd expect, and Trollope doesn't condescend to either Austen or the present day. For fans of Austen retellings, Curtis Sittenfeld, or anyone curious how these characters would navigate Tinder and Instagram.
