The three volumes in this series present a concise overview of the major themes of spiritual discourse in Europe. Each of the volumes is a visual feast an illuminating introduction to the rich and colourful symbolism of our forgotten European heritage. This book examines the development of both an idea, a Christian code of conduct for men at arms, and the flowering of a new relationship between sexes known as "courtly love". The elaborate rituals of courtly love, whose exquisite pains and pleasures were immortalized by the troubadours, were also a metaphor for religious devotion.
