In a summer afternoon in 1854, rag and bone lady Aggie Winkowski and her crippled helper, Ben, rescues 10-year-old Millie Forester from the filthy mid-19th century streets of Newcastle as the pretty child's unfortunate prostitute mother is hauled off to jail.
